Organizational Future by Design™

You do not need to keep re-living your past. You can design and live a bold new future.

Why do most companies operate the way they do? The answer is quite simple. They operate today essentially the way they operated yesterday. And yesterday they operated the way they did the day before, except more, better and different, still embedded in a past in which incremental improvement will happen at best. The list of companies who let themselves become extinct in this manner is endless.

The world changes every day. It is absolutely relentless in its evolution. Where would General Electric be if they continued to be merely a manufacturer and distributor of electrical parts and components? Where is the once shining example of innovation, Polaroid, that focused on making ever-better instant-film cameras? One soared and one plunged into the abyss. General Electric stepped boldly into a new and risky future … and is thriving. Polaroid adamantly insisted on living an improved version of its past.

The only way to dramatically move forward is for everyone in our organization to find completion with the past and to align on our chosen future.

Some facts*:

  1. 95% of companies’ employees, on average, are not aware of, or do not understand, its strategy. (That is not a misprint – 95% is the number).
  2. 87% of all companies, between 1988 and 1998, failed to achieve profitable growth. That is, they were unable to deliver 5.5% annual real growth in revenues and earnings while recouping their cost of capital.

*As reported in the October 2005 issue of the Harvard Business Review by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton, referencing the book Profit from the Core by Chris Zook and James Allen.

Was that scary enough? How about some more numbers:

  • 85% of executive leadership teams spend less than one hour per month discussing their unit’s strategy.
  • 50% of those same people spend no time discussing their unit’s strategy.
  • 67% of HR and IT departments are not aligned with, nor do their plans support, corporate or business unit strategic priorities.
  • 70% of all middle managers’ compensation packages have no link to the success or failure of strategy implementation. 90% of frontline employees have no such link.

Statistics guarantee that most of the above likely applies to you and your organization.

The point?

Breaking from your past and developing an Organizational Future by Design™ is a crucial, intense and often introspective journey that will generate extraordinary results that had previously been considered impossible. An interesting side-effect is that you will find the process freeing, leaving you energized.

But you must live this Future every minute of every day. Your people must be aligned on this Future. You cannot order them to be aligned on your bold new future, they must be enrolled. Together, we can accomplish all of this and more.

Some of the things companies’ leaders do when they let us help them live their dream:

  • Acknowledge and complete the past, resolving old or persistent issues, dissolving unwanted conditions that are counterproductive to the growth of the organization
  • Become deeply related to each other
  • Invent a compelling new future, including a Strategic Way of Being, Remarkable Customer Value and a Bold Promise
  • Align the entire organization with that future
  • Call forth new strategies, actions and commitments
  • Take effective actions to fulfill that future, using right to left thinking
  • Develop a quantum leap in performance

The Benefits?

  • Immediate, previously-impossible results
  • Everyone operating as a team, being in action based on the exciting future they have created, rather than based on past history and experience.
  • Personal accountability and integrity at all times
  • Invent a Strategic Way of Being™ and Remarkable Customer Value™
  • Responsibility and ownership evidenced by all
  • Communication that is open, honest and direct
  • New ways of being that translate directly into bottom-line results.

People do this every day. When is your time?

We are not merely re-energized but literally transformed into a new entity.
